A Line In The Sand is a game jam project designed in the style of a strategy board game, where two players compete against each other on a grid, each controlling a colony of ant. They need to kill a large beetle and harvest it as food while protecting their line of worker ants from the other player, while trying to stop the other player from doing the same.
Role OverviewFor the first part of the project, I worked a s a gameplay designer. After we have decided on a game premise and worked out our primary mechanic, I transitioned into a UI role and developed the menu and navigation.
I developed:
-Main Menu-Controls Screen (tutorialization)
-Score indicators
-End Panel indicating who won the game and the score they had
-Credits Screen
Project Take-aways
I learned a lot of time management on this project. It was my first game jam, and I definitely underestimated how much time we had available to work. Our project was over-scoped and suffered because of it. We managed to get all of our mechanics in and working, but had we focused the food collection part of the game and cut the combat part, the game could have been a lot more strategic and interesting. At my next game jam, I'll have a much better idea of what 2 days entails with design allowances.
